As we are ALL aware, NASA launched an online poll to aide the naming and one of the choices was “Serenity”. This proved to be the popular online choice until Steven Colbert asked viewers to vote for “Colbert” during one of his shows. This became the out-right winner, but NASA were to be the final arbiter on the eventual choice.
As many of our US readers and listners are more than aware, Tuesday night saw astronaut Suni Williams officially announce the result of the naming of the ISS’s “node 3” on that night’s edition of “The Colbert Report”. Despite being the clear winner of the choice of names provided by NASA themselves, the Agency decided to go with the 8th place choice: “Tranquility”. Space buffs will know that 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on the Sea of Tranquility.
Oh, Steven Colbert does have his wish though – a treadmill is being named after him.
